Some more UI Design

I finally got the right texture for my background! I’ve been looking for the effect for a couple of days now. I found a texture pack with a fabric that suited my needs. I love designing like this, it’s really playful and fun.

Springtime is coming!

So I’ve been dipping my toes in the water of UI design. I’ve found a lot of inspiration the last couple of days, a lot from dribbble and designspiration. Both great websites when your looking for inspiration.

Some UI Design

Trying out UI Design

Big buttons are awesome

What’s next?

As I’ve written in previous posts I’ve been looking for something new to broaden my competence with. This autumn/winter I’ve been learning a lot about JavaScript, just briefly looking into Ruby and I’m getting a lot more comfortable with PHP.

But there hasn’t been as much time for design. That’s OK, I’m very happy that I’m in a profession where you will never stop learning new things everyday. It keeps you mind fresh. So this spring I will focus my time on learning more about Design. There’s sooo many great designers out there, so inspiration will not be a problem.

The Goal

I want to be a Front-End Developer / Designer. I want the knowledge about front end programming (such as JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, AJAX) but at the same time the skills to design really neat user interfaces and websites.

My next project

I’m in the early stages of creating a new blog. I won’t say what it’s about just yet, but as I mentioned before there will be concept art and other shit coming up soon.

Until then,
Have a good one!

Working on a To-Do-List

Posted

, , , ,

So I’ve been absent from this for over a month and decided to get back on track and start producing content again.

I’m currently in the process of digging deeper into JavaScript and jQuery and what better way to learn more than to make an aplication?

So here’s a sneek-a-peek :

Yep, it’s a Todo List! A very simple application and a great way to start using jQuery and JavaScript.

Building a Website Part 1: Planning

Posted

, , , ,

So as the title suggests I’m embarking on a 7 part series in how I build websites. I will go through the process of building a site from the early planning stage to a complete and fully functional site.

About the Project

I’ve been wanting to create a cool site about me that got the same awesome scrolling and foregrund/background thing going as Nike Better World. It’s really cool and have also grown popular the last months.

A couple of  great sites that uses this technology:
7 Best Things of 2010 – By Dave Gamache
Ben the Bodyguard
Manufacture d’Essai

So I want to use this scrolling parallax effect and create a small site about what I do, what techniques I know, who I am and what I like to do. I also want to include some contact information and links to social networks. And maybe a picture of me as well.

If you’ve read my previous posts you will see that I’ve created some concept art for this project. I did this before i began writing my mind map or even had an idea for a site. Sometimes I feel that sitting down and just designing without a tangible idea, points me in the right direction before I’ve even started.

Brainstorming

First up is sitting down with a nice big cup of coffe. I usually don’t sit near the computer, the TV or anything that will distract me. Just start from scratch with a pen and a paper. Make a mind map and just write down anything that you come up with. You can always scratch the ideas you don’t like afterwards. But right now it’s brainstorming and it’s a process that requires you just write what pops up in your mind.

A Mind Map for my New Site

So after sitting down a good 30 minutes with my big cup of coffe, my notepad and my awesome pencil I’ve created a printed version of the idea I had in mind (hence ”Mind Map”). This is what I came up whit during my brainstorming.

The key Parts of My New Website

  • Page One: A quick presentation of me and what I do
  • Page Two: The techniques I know (HTML5, CSS3, jQuery)
  • Page Three: I Love Responsive Design
  • Page Four:WordPress Loves Me
  • Page Five: Four things I like to do in my free time
  • Page Six: My contact information and a  picture of me.

Design

The website will be a one-page based on six parts that will lie on top of each other. The user can scroll down or click a button to move to the next part. Every part of the page will be using different fonts and colors. The parts will contain some text, but the goal is to keep the amount of text down and let the illustrations speak for themselves. Whilst scrolling the page the visitor will experience a parallax scrolling effect. Every page will illustrate some sort of situation connected to the subject.

Theme

The main element of the site will be a cartoon character (who portrays me) that’s part of every situation. For example could the part about Responsive Design include the character holding an iPad. The characters appearance should capture my self-deprecating humor and should have a lot of flaws.

Technology

This project will need a review of what technologies will do the job of creating an awesome application. The parallax scrolling effect is going to be the biggest challenge to overcome and at the same time be the coolest feature. Every part of the one-page design is going to be as big as the visitors window. That means if you resize your window, the part will resize too.

The website should also be Responsive, compatible in all browsers going back to IE7 and be really speed optimized.

The techonolgy is going to be the heavy lifting for me in this project. But I’m always up for new challenges and after completing this project I will have lots of new knowledge.

Goal

I think every project should have a main goal that you’re trying to reach. My goal with this site is to get featured on Awwwards. That is my main goal, but getting featured on other website galleries would be cool as well.

That’s it for now! Next part will go through creating a visual sketch of how the page will look and function.

Cheers!

Building an e-commerce site

Posted

, ,

Lately we’ve got two mayor clients at work who wanted to set up e-commerce websites to broaden their business online. I was assigned to the task of creating the e-commerce site with a WordPress plugin. But as well known by many, the plugins today are far from being a full blown e-commerce platform. And because I live in Sweden, Shopify was not the right answer for us. We needed services that worked with invoices that followed Swedish laws and also our native postal service.

And building an e-commerce platform from scratch in PHP or whatever is not an option for me. I don’t want to be responsible for people’s credit card information getting leaked out because of my lacking programming skills. So, we solved it by turning to an outside partner. We’re using the biggest e-commerce platform in Sweden created by e-butik.se. I’m really hoping that this well be the right option for us.

In the meantime I’m thinking forward; having the skills to create complete e-commerce platforms can make you a lot of money. So I’ve decided to learn Magento.

An Open Source E-commerce CMS

Magento is an E-commerce platform that is open source and developed by it’s community. Just like WordPress there’s a lot of people involved with the CMS and you can always turn to the community if you have a problem. It comes filled with features that will help you on your way of building an awesome e-commerce site. It’s theme based (also like WordPress) and that makes a designer like me very happy.

As I’ve talked about in previous posts, I’m really keen on broadening my horizons and moving on to other web platforms besides WordPress. I scratched the surface on Ruby, but I got some problems getting it to work on my PC. So I’m going to put Ruby on a hold for a while. Instead I’m diving into Magento.

This is going to be Awesome!

Cheers,

The Power of Writing Stuff Down

Posted

, ,

In the past six months I’ve worked as a web designer at winternet, I’ve learnt (the hard way) that you have to write stuff down. It’s a perfect way to organize the big mess inside your head and keep your back clean. If you write down instructions you get from people and carefully go trough them, you minimize problems and misunderstanding that could pop up later in the process.

It’s simple right? Simple yet so powerful!
